Each industry sector in South Africa seeks to foster competitiveness and contribute to economic growth through the strategic projects that are undertaken. Project management as a profession and competency area is manifesting as an enabler in more industries than ever before, resulting in a deepening and broadening of the body of knowledge.
In November 2015, PMSA's Western Cape Region celebrates the project management profession by highlighting the application of project management in 'traditional' industries and 'new' industries such as film and major event management. The conference seeks to impart best practices and new knowledge through insightful presentations and case studies by thought leaders in the disciplines associated with successful project management, and those who have achieved success on some of the region’s most prominent infrastructure projects.
Amongst the projects to be reflected on are those in film production, the Square Kilometre Array, major events such as the Commonwealth Games, and the MyCiti transport initiative. The keynote presentation on the first day will be delivered by Jürgen Oschadleus, an international thought leader who relates project management competency to what has been learned from notable historic events followed by acclaimed futurologist Clem Sunter on Day Two. The programme also features a highly anticipated talk by Tim Harris, Chief Executive Officer of WesGro, previous MP for Cape Town's "Good Hope" constituency and the Parliamentary Counsellor to Lindiwe Mazibuko, the Leader of the Opposition. Please see a detailed programme below.

Keynote Address: Jϋrgen Oschadleus, Director ACT Knowledge
Topic: Waterloo – Leadership that changed the world
Waterloo was a battle of muskets, swords and regiments of 190 000 bright uniforms, in an era when the flow of communication was governed by the speed of men on horseback, and generals could see no further than telescopes and topography allowed. It lasted only one day and resulted in 71 000 casualties. But the lessons from that day transcend time and are applicable to any leader having to manage large numbers of people and logistics in complex situations under extreme pressure.
In this gripping and intensively researched presentation, project leadership educator and part time historian Jürgen Oschadleus MA (History) MAIPM ILPF PMP takes you on a fascinating journey to a pivotal point in world history. He intertwines eye-witness testimonies, the reflections of key stakeholders, artist impressions and the analytical expertise of military historians to weave a compelling story of the time, the men and their decisions in one of history’s bloodiest projects.

Speaker: Dieter Jansen, John Maxwell Certified Executive Coach
Topic: Authentic Leadership – The mindset required for making a difference.
When we are in a leadership position, we are called to make a difference. Leadership is about bringing in change, not simply upholding the status quo. We know that as leaders, change is brought about by the people that we interact with, and our success depends on the influence we have with those people. Our influence dramatically increases when we are making a difference in the lives of those people. In this talk, the concept of making a difference in peoples’ lives is presented in a practical and inspiring way. We define what it means to make a difference, and illustrate how to intentionally apply it in our lives.

Topic: A Growth Mindset: Making a Positive Contribution to the Economy
Extensive research has been carried out on the difference between “fixed mindsets” and “growth mindsets”, and the different impacts that these mindsets can have on our work and our lives in general. Individuals with a fixed mindset tend to believe that their level of talent is a given, whereas individuals with a growth mindset enjoy challenges, strive to learn and believe that they have the potential to develop new skills. This presentation will discuss the potential impacts of the mindsets of individuals and teams on the productivity and economic success of organisations, and how project and change managers can leverage this knowledge for successful project outcomes.

As business leaders embark on Enterprise and systems transformation to remain competitive the pressure for these projects to succeed and for investments to show a positive ROI increases year on year. With 70% of major change implementations yielding sub-optimized results and the average time taken to develop mature business capabilities exceeding 5+ years, how can the transformational PMO & Change Practitioner of today deliver a successful program on a finite budget in an ever more complex information & collaboration landscape? Topic: SLOW Coaching – A practical session for stressed out project managers
Project management is undoubtedly one of the careers associated with the highest stress levels. We are directly responsible and accountable for success or failure in projects and programs we work on.
Most often we see stress in a negative light; high or prolonged stress levels can be detrimental to projects, our health and our relationships and family lives. However, stress is also a natural driving force used to achieve goals and overcome challenges.
The first part of this session is a brief overview of the concept of stress (both eustress and distress) and its effect on us. During the second part you will have the opportunity to participate in a few mindful exercises which can be useful in everyday life as we deal with stress.
