He completed a MSc in Project Management, whose dissertation is a subject of today’s presentation. He is a professional project Manager (PMP). He is married and has recently welcomed his first son. He has fifteen years professional experience in the employ of Eskom Holdings SOC limited, the only company he has worked for. His career started at Arnot Power Station as a mechanical engineering technician in the maintenance department, where he applied practical ‘hands-on’ experience to technical failures at the power plant. Kriel Power Station provided an opportunity to practice the basics of project management in the initiating, planning and execution of outage programmes. “My passion in project management was strongly embedded when I was promoted to head the projects department at Duvha Power Station”, he says. Currently, he is a programme manager in the Strategy Support Division, Eskom head office.
TALK INFORMATION:
Sello Masongwa will take you through his dissertation, titled: Entrepreneurial personality characteristics exhibited by project managers in successful projects. He sought to establish whether there is any significant relationship between the entrepreneurial traits exhibited by project managers and project success. The study is anchored on a comprehensive literature foundation in the three disciplines of interest: Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Personality. Key findings are that: consensus is emerging in the literature that project success can be reliably established through the assessment of the multi-dimensional criteria, which includes: project efficiency, impact on the customer, business success and preparing for the future factors. A Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient computed from the collected data showed that a significant relationship exists between project success and the entrepreneurial trait “need for achievement”, but none was established between the dimensions of project success and risk-taking and locus of control. An implication for project management discipline is that: in addition to other selection criteria, the entrepreneurial trait Need for Achievement must be assessed and taken into account. Such an inclusion will contribute to the success of projects in general.
