TOPIC: Umgeni Waters East Coast Desalination Plants – A Detailed Feasibility Study
Umgeni Water is the bulk water service provider for six municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. Much of the water supplied is from traditional water sources including dams on the Mgeni System (Pietermaritzburg to Durban corridor), the South Coast and the North Coast. The future demand for water in these areas is predicted to exceed the current supply capacity of the water resources and as such the Department of Water and Sanitation, together with Umgeni Water, has had to consider alternative water resource options for augmentation. One of the augmentation options under consideration is large scale seawater desalination. Umgeni Water has recently completed a Detailed Feasibility Study on two large scale seawater desalination plants. The two 150Ml/d East Coast Desalination Plants would be positioned at Lovu on the South Coast and Tongaat on the North Coast. This presentation will outline the findings from the detailed feasibility study and will also provide information on the challenges that would be faced if either of these plants progress to construction and operation.
PRESENTER: Kevin Meier
Kevin Meier graduated with an MSc in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Natal, South Africa in 1996. He worked in the consulting environment for nine years where he became a professional engineer. He then joined Umgeni Water as a Planning Engineer in 2005 and is now the manager of the Planning Services Department where he heads up a team of engineers and hydrologists. The Planning services Department identifies infrastructure that will be required to meet future water resource and water supply needs for Umgeni Waters operational area.
