ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Michael Strang (Mike) is currently a Deputy Director in the South African Department of Environmental Affairs responsible for a 27 million U.S. dollar program called: Strengthening Law Enforcement Capabilities to Combat Wildlife Crime for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Species in South Africa (target: rhinoceros).
Prior to coming to South Africa in 2013, Mike was a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State.  He served in the northern Iraqi province of Iraq for two years where he was responsible for stabilization programs in governance, rule-of-law, economic development, agriculture and health…all of which were coordinated with and supported U.S. military counterinsurgency programs against Al Qaeda.  These programs, conducted during wartime, mirror the current fight against international wildlife trafficking in many respects.
Prior to going to Iraq in 2009, Mike served as a treaty observer in the Sinai Peninsula and in Israel during the Israeli bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip known as Cass Lead.
Mike was a director of International programs at Oracle and Maersk for nine years.  During that time he developed and managed programs in over 12 countries in support of international cooperation agreements, commonly known as Offsets, tied to U.S. weapons tenders.
Mike served as a U.S. Army rotary wing and fixed wing pilot for 27 years before leaving active duty for the private sector.
