PMSA Western Cape is proud to invite you to a talk presented by Cliff Court – “Mobile Technology, interesting points that not many know, implications of mobile tech choices and some war stories”

 Mobile technologies are now accepted as a key channel for organisations to engage customers, staff and suppliers. In fact many overseas companies are now adopting a “mobile-first” strategy for their customer engagement initiatives. However, just accepting mobile as an important channel is not sufficient, and many companies are still doing the bare minimum to tick the mobile box. Often, companies view mobile as simply a mini website resulting, in some cases, in actually putting off potential clients rather than engaging them.

The fact is that “mobile” covers a very large spectrum of technologies and applications. This talk will scratch the surface by providing an overview of available mobile technologies in SA, and where to use the most appropriate channels to provide the best returns for your projects. We’ll discuss how even “simple” technologies such as SMS are far more involved than one thinks, how unscrupulous WASPs (Wireless Service Providers) are literally stealing money from mobile phone users, and some of the complexity involved in developing smartphone/tablet apps.

By the end of the talk, just as PMSA members understand the importance of having an experienced project manager on-board for key projects, when setting out to implement mobile initiatives, it will hopefully become clear that it’s better to work with someone with many years of experience in the field, than the clever 12-year-old who lives down the road.

 
ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Cliff Court

Cliff has over 15 years of experience with mobile technologies and has developed systems using most mobile channels including SMS, MMS, voice, USSD, mobi-sites, mobile payments as well as smartphone/tablet apps. He has a B.Sc in Electrical Engineering and a M.Com in Information Systems, both from UCT, and is a senior member of the SA Institute of Electrical Engineers. Starting out as a electronics designer for Plessey, Cliff moved in software development in the 1990’s and then into mobile from 2000. Cliff has developed over 250 mobile-based systems, including for several large SA companies including Investec, Liberty, Brandhouse, Sanlam, Old Mutual, Dimension Data and Naspers.
