ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Philip Gibbs is a project manager currently working on the MeerKAT Radio Telescope project. A 64 Dish Array due to be commissioned 80km outside the Northern Cape Karoo town of Carnarvon at the end of 2016.
The MeerKAT Array is a precursor to the large Square Kilometre Array which will be built in the same area.

Philip is an experienced Electrical Engineer with Mechanical Engineering and Project Management experience having worked in various industries from the Military to Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designs.

Being involved on this project has allowed Philip to combine his skills in Project Management and Electrical Engineering to provide the necessary processes and structure required for his teams to successfully build the Digital Backend of the MeerKAT array.

The evening will cover quite a wide range of things in the presentation from the history of the SKA, to the construction of the arrays we currently have, the obstacles he faced in the organisation moving forward, and at the same time answer any questions put forward by you.
