ABOUT THE TALK
It is common to think of good professional practice as a matter of technical competence. In other words, as a level of professionalism defined by an ability to make an efficient choice of means with a view to achieving a particular end.
However, very little thought is ever given to the issue of what is required to make professional practice ‘good’. The issue is a normative question in terms of the professional’s obligations to society and should thus be more appropriately determined by a quest not only for practical reason and professional competence, but also for rational action.
The talk will cover the attributes that distinguish the professional from other occupational groups; the industry context in which the professional works; the relevance of the organisational structure of the professional’s industry; the importance of stakeholder interest and, ultimately, the requirements of ‘good’ practice.
