ABOUT THE EVENT Project management as a discipline implies to have been trained to adhere and obey the rules or a code of behavior and be accountable when these rules are broken. It requires disseminating knowledge of desired codes of behavior, practitioners performing duties in accordance with these codes of behavior, and corrective measure being implemented where required. It can be argued that management behavior requires guidance to assist in increasing project success with governance guiding behavior to achieve a desired goal.
Prof. Carl Marnewick observes in his recent research on applied project governance in the IT industry that while various foundational and theoretical governance frameworks exist outside of the project management discipline very little is to be found on the governance of projects within the discipline. In this session of the Knowledge Series Prof Marnewick takes a look at existing governance activities being practiced by IT project managers and the extent to which these activities are being practiced. He proposes that these activities can be formalized as a basis for adopting a minimal approach to adhering to good corporate governance within the context of project management. The latest instalment of the Knowledge Series explores applied project governance in the context of research; trends in practice with lessons learned and recommendation of good practices; and those methodologies that promote success. Mature organisations are those that have been able to identify the need for and incorporate multiple methodologies to handle various aspects of the knowledge areas in project management.
Elize van Straten, Lead Consultant at the South African State Information Technology Agency (SITA) EPMO Centre of Excellence will share her insights into the policies, practices and experiences that create an environment for improved governance and as a result contribute to project success. One of the most important functions of Project Portfolio Management (PPM) is that it gives better control of projects—and more warning when a project starts to go awry. Guy Jelley, Project Portfolio Office CEO, as the ‘Methodology’ contributor for the session will focus on the decisions and practices required to identify and entrench methodologies to achieve project governance. In addition, he will discuss a few practical recommendations for how governance can be achieved successfully and what practices have been positive for organisations who have implemented project governance. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
PROF CARL MARNEWICK
Prof Marnewick’s sound knowledge and practical experience in the implementation of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems and IT infrastructure project management as well as focus on the needs of the customer has enabled him to establish a solid track record of adding concrete value in organisations that are implementing ERP systems and are in the need of customer management.
Prof Carl Marnewick’s academic career started in 2007 when he joined the University of Johannesburg. He traded his professional career as a senior Information Technology (IT) project manager for that of an academic career. The career change provided him the opportunity to emerge himself in the question why IT/IS-related projects are not always successful and do not provide the intended benefits that were originally anticipated. Prof Marnewick has identified the gap between theory and practice as a global issue where valuable resources are wasted on projects and programmes that do not add value to the strategic objectives of the organisation.
Prof Marnewick’s research has given him national and international presence and he is currently a regular reviewer for national and international journals. He is actively involved in the development of new international project management standards ISO21500 and ISO21502 (portfolio management). In 2012 Project Management SA awarded him the Excellence in Research Award as recognition for his active contribution to the local and global body of knowledge by conducting and publishing scientific research in portfolio, programme and project management.
