In November 2018, PMSA launched the PM Technology User’s Group – an initiative designed to equip project managers with an understanding of disruptive technology; and enhance their application of existing technology tools.

The next session of the Technology User’s Group will take place at Microsoft SA’s Bryanston, Johannesburg venue, with an option for a Skype link-up, on Wednesday 30 January 2019, from 14:00.

Each session will address specific aspects of technology in project management, using case studies or hands-on tutorials. At the January event, our approach is the latter, as Clifford Andrews from ABSA guides project managers on transferring project task data from Excel to MS Project. He will share best practise techniques on correctly setting up project schedules and explain, in depth, the interface between Project and Excel, including identifying which fields in Project are key to getting the basics right, from the start.

The session will include documentation and explanations in a step-by-step approach.

The session will also explore what is enabled by this knowledge, from a business intelligence perspective. Microsoft's Bishan Ruder will spend 15 minutes discussing the following:

MS Project and Project Online comes with out of the box sample reports that you as project and portfolio managers can use as a starting point for reporting on your projects.

As a flexible online solution for project portfolio management (PPM), Project Online enables organizations to get started, prioritize project portfolio investments and deliver the intended business value. The Project Online content pack for Power BI allows you to unlock insights from Project to help manage projects, portfolios and resources. One can immediately gather insights about selected portfolios using point-and-click reporting capabilities and summary dashboards.

In this brief session, we will present where to find these reports and how easy it is to connect to the Project Online tenant to seamlessly create a simple risk / issue dashboard report using the simplicity of Project Online and Power BI.
