On behalf of Project Management South Africa, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and global community of friends of Jaycee Krüger, who passed away on Sunday, 4 August 2019 following a struggle with cancer.

Jaycee was a founding member of PMSA and served for several years as Vice President: International Liaison on the PMSA executive committee, representing PMSA in a variety of forums.

‘I shall always remember JC with his braces, debating principles, ideas and actions we should be taking. He always brought fun and energy to our meetings. JC was always enthusiastic about helping people grow their knowledge in the field of project management and for many years he promoted the PMP certification from PMI, to the point that for a time in the late 1990s South Africa had the highest number of PMPs outside of North America. He was wonderful at pulling in people to help deliver the PMP Prep weekends that the PMI SA Chapter and PMSA ran after the formation of PMSA. Later he helped the PM Standards Generating Body in developing the qualifications that were registered with SAQA from 2004. He was one of the first assessors.’ Lesley Rider, PMSA Fellow, Past president and board member of PMSA, trainer and consultant.

'I remember Jaycee as someone who understood all the complexity and sophistication of Project Management but who had the genius of expressing it in an easy to understand and modest but passionate way to any and all audiences.
I never met anyone who did not have the greatest respect and affection for him and I count myself amongst this constituency. My condolences to his family and friends.' Neil Penson-Director-PMSA

‘I met JC during the PMP Exam Prep courses in 1999 and he was the invigilator when I wrote my exam. He was a natural mentor who shared freely from his vast knowledge, but he never tolerated sloppy work. Since we met he was always my go-to person when I needed project management help and I remember that he always called me when he needed help with his laptops. Our friendship went much deeper than that though and we would often talk about life, religion, and family. While he travelled a lot to spread the word about Project Management, he always made time for his local friends even if it was only a quick coffee in the nearest Wimpy. To another of the big elephants to leave us for better grazing: Thank you for everything JC, and I hope the pain is now better. Hope to see you again one day’, Leon Uys, Senior PM, trainer and consultant.

‘My earliest memories of Jaycee hark back to the early 2000s, when I began attending PMI congresses and covering the event for ProjectNet and identifying international speakers for our local conferences. Jaycee, it seemed, knew everyone. Not only was he a master networker, he was also a genuine, likeable and curious person who had an incredible passion for all things project management. He would generously facilitate my introduction to the thought leaders of the day and on occasion negotiated my entry into ‘closed’ events, so I had the opportunity to corner people for interviews. I recall how he would sport the entire spectrum of ‘status’ ribbons attached to his nametag at the PMI Global Congress, confirming his role as volunteer, holder of most, if not all credentials, and seasoned congress-goer’.’ Taryn van Olden, CEO PMSA.

Jaycee’s focus was the construction space and he ran his own project management consultancy, aptly named Greybeards Inc., yet found time to volunteer for many years on the ISO committees developing PM standards, including holding the position of chairman of the SABS TC258 committee.

We suspect that the reward Jaycee enjoyed most from his volunteer service was the opportunity to travel the world, sharing his knowledge and growing his network with every passing year. From the tributes being posted in PM circles today, it is clear his loss is indeed being felt the world over.

We remember you, your passion and commitment fondly Jaycee, and wish your loved ones peace and comfort at this sad time.

Jaycee's funeral will take place on Friday, 9 August 2019 in Heidelberg, at the Reformed Church, Cnr Pretorius and Louw Street, at 11:00.
