Identify ways to Diversify in your PM Career

Ignaz Fuesgen, 2018 PMSA National Conference Speaker

In uncertain times, nobody really wants to try and predict the future, but we keep hearing about how the jobs of tomorrow don’t even exist today, and many of today’s jobs won’t exist in the future. How then do you future-proof your career?

Any introspection about your professional life is likely to hit onto the topic of diversity. The more diverse your skill set, the better your prospects. But how do you decide where to invest your time and money in acquiring new competencies if the future is so uncertain?

Keeping your ear to the ground is one way. This requires placing yourself in the right environment, tuning into your peer group and asking the right questions when you get there. It requires exposing yourself to new knowledge, and processing the information you gather from people you trust and using this to make wise decisions. At this year’s PMSA National Conference, taking place form 14 to 16 November 2018 at The Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, a number of speakers will be presenting new ideas for how project managers can diversify their professional offerings.

Take Ignaz Fuesgen for example. He is the Director and Founder of KOHMAP Consulting and its affiliate Avuka Training and Coaching, both rendering management advice, coaching and training services exclusively to Professional Services Firms and in-house legal and compliance departments.

He says, “For a long time, in-house legal teams, attorneys and other legal service providers have extracted themselves from applying the principles and tools of project management to legal matters.

These days, a rapidly changing legal, regulatory and business environment, coupled with smaller budgets for legal advisors and, overall, limited internal resources, necessitate a paradigm shift.”

Ignaz says ’Legal Project Management (LPM)’ is now the talk of the town. If you are thinking that this means more lawyers are going to be studying project management, this isn’t necessarily the case. It is more likely that the legal services space will be wanting to bring experienced project managers in to provide structure to their legal matters.

In his presentation, Ignaz will point out specific aspects to look out for that are unique to the legal sector and explain how project professionals can benefit from this trend.

A strategic thinker and implementer, Ignaz has more than 19 years' experience in transforming professional services towards value optimisation and client service excellence. Holistic strategy formulation and implementation, market development and intercultural communication characterise his achievements with leading professional services firms in Europe and Africa including KPMG, BearingPoint, Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy and Webber Wentzel.
