On a number of occasions it has been proven that most of our projects are over managed and under led. That is, when it comes to projects, we put so much emphasis in managerial than leadership practices. Over and above this, research is clearly showing that when projects fail; the majority of the causes fall within the human behaviour dimension. The question is, why do project practitioners pay less attention to this dimension. Join Dr Lunga Msengana as he unpacks the intricacies of this subject.

Lunga started his career as a Professional Engineering Technologist Engineering. He obtained a BSc Hons in Applied Science (with specialisation in Electronic Engineering) through the University of Pretoria. Years later, his passion for projects led him to formally study Project Management, in which he obtained a Masters of Commerce in Project Management (Cum Laude) at the Cranefield College of Project and Programme Management. He then completed his PhD in Commerce and Administration with the same institution in 2017.

He has worked as a Technician, Business Analyst, Engineer and Project Manager. He has had the opportunity to work for Denel, Saab Tech, Molapo Technology, and Vodacom. He is currently a senior project manager for Eskom Telecommunications. He is also an Associate Part-time Lecturer at both Cranefield and the UNISA School of Business Leadership (SBL). Lunga is a member of Project Management South Africa (PMSA) and the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa (IoDSA). He is the past president of PMSA and a former non-executive director of World Vision South Africa. Lunga is also a Pastor and a Transformational Life Coach.

In November 2012, Lunga published a book titled, “The Missing Link in Projects”. The book gives full credit to the human factor in project management and it acknowledges the vital role people play in the unfolding of projects. He has been a featured speaker at many conferences in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. He has also written project management articles for ProjectNet and PMWorld Journal.
