The water crisis in Cape Town has resulted in the requirement for a completely new paradigm as South Africa looks towards the future management of its limited water resources in a sustainable manner. 

To this end PMSA Western Cape have decided to host a series of talks on this topic presented by leading experts in the field. The purpose is to assist project managers in all industries gain a holistic understanding of the extent of the challenge we face, the policies and procedures that need to be put in place, and the economic principles to be applied in the future management of our valuable resource. 

Part one of this series titled 'The Challenge' took place on 13th March and saw Dr Kevin Water discuss 'The Hydrological Challenge' while Dr Kirsty Carden shared insights around a Water Sensitive Design. Please see below information on our next sessions in the series.

Part 2: An Alternative Approach, 20th March 2018

Benjamin Biggs is a civil engineer at JG Afrika and works in both the Municipal Infrastructure & Sustainability divisions. Ben has been focussed mainly on the provision of municipal infrastructure and services in line with the principles of Water Sensitive Urban Design and Sustainable Development principles. Projects he has been a part of include a range of environmental sustainability related projects – where water, energy and waste interventions were developed for implementation, provision of water minimisation and alternative water supply systems, bulk water infrastructure and others.

Apart from his work for JG Afrika, Ben gained some experience in the field agricultural engineering having grown up on a farm and design and implementing various irrigation projects in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

An Introduction to Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD); highlighting how WSUD provides opportunities for better planning and design or urban systems

Dr Chris Hartnady is a director of Umvoto Africa, an earth sciences consultancy. Prior to joining Umvoto in 2000, he was Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Cape Town.  Hehas contributed widely in the areas of African plate tectonics, fractured-rock hydrogeology, integrated water-resource development, monitoring and management, in addition to geo-hazard analysis and the assessment and mitigation of geo-risks.
